Come, Lord Jesus, show us your mercy and grace, show us how to do the things of God. Amen.
(Psalm 110:1, John 11:27, Matthew 13:49, 16:27, Mark 14:61-62)
Scripture Reading - Mark 8:27-9:1 (ESV)
And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?”
And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.”
And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.”
And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.
And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.”
Lord Jesus, we too, receive your rebuke, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God but on the things of man." Forgive us for not setting our hearts on things above, where you are seated at the right hand of God. Since we have been raise with you, help us to set our minds on things above, not on earthly things. For we have died with you and our life is now hidden with you in God. We long for the day when you will appear, for then we will appear with you in glory! (Colossians 3:1-4)
Father in Heaven, we see from Isaiah's prophecy, your plan for salvation.
Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him;Your will has prospered in Christ's hand! Our days have been prolonged into eternity by your Saving Arm. You have credited us with righteousness through our faith in your Anointed One. We have peace with you by the blood of his cross. (Colossians 1:20)
he has put him to grief;
when his soul makes an offering for guilt,
he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,
make many to be accounted righteous,
and he shall bear their iniquities. (Isaiah 53:10-11)
O Holy Anointed One, you have bore our iniquities. You were oppressed and afflicted, yet you did not open your mouth in defense. Like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep before its shearers is silent, you did not open your mouth (Isaiah 53:7). We bow before you and worship you!
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might
and honor and glory and blessing!
To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever! Amen. (Revelation 5:11-13)
